(WFRV) - The anticipated nine-day gun deer hunting season in Wisconsin began Saturday, November 23, and runs through Sunday, December 1. This year marks the latest possible start for the season, as set by state law. While fewer deer may be moving due to the timing, factors like cold temperatures and snow could make for ideal hunting conditions. Last year’s mild winter has also likely improved fawn production and antler growth. ‘Watch for hunters’: Wisconsin Department of Transportation reminds motorists to be mindful as gun-deer season begins According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), over 444,000 hunting licenses have been sold as of late October, with 123,861 for gun privileges alone. Hunters are reminded to register their harvested deer by 5 p.m. the day after recovery through GameReg online, by phone, or at in-person stations. Hunters are urged to follow the four firearm safety rules: T Treat every firearm as loaded. A Always point the muzzle in a safe direction. B Be sure of your target and what’s beyond it. K Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. Blaze orange or fluorescent pink clothing is required, and hunters born after Jan. 1, 1973, must have a hunter education certification unless participating in a mentored hunt.
