Theaters turn pink and green in Rochester to celebrate 'Wicked' premiere night
Nov 22, 2024
WEBSTER, N.Y. (WROC) — If you haven't heard already, Friday is opening night for the new film adaptation of hit musical "Wicked." The film has been highly anticipated for years by fans including right here at home.
Friday's scene at AMC Webster was reminiscent of 2023 events such as the Barbie and Oppenheimer release weekend, and the "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" film premiere. However, there was a new energy in the theatre as fans who have loved the musical for a long time were ready to see it on the screen.
"I'm here because I really like Ariana Grande and when I heard she was going to be a character in the movie, so I came here," Kareilys said.
That star studded cast was a big draw to those who unfamiliar with the show.
Lanni, however, knows the story of "Wicked" inside and out.
"Wicked was the first show I saw on Broadway, as like a teenager," they said. "To see people be so excited and united. I'm a teacher. My fifth graders are all saying they're excited for it too... I'm like 'Aw! This is something we can share!'
And indeed, there was something for all ages. Movie theatres upped the ante with a photo booth, as well as character cups and popcorn buckets.
In fact, there has been so much hype, it was hard for one group of girls to plan a "Wicked" birthday party on premiere night.
Gio Battaglia: "Tell me what movie you guys are here to see?"
"Red One," they said. "There was way more availability because Wicked was all sold out."
Another movie drawing in fans Friday night, "Gladiator II." Laura and her husband have planned to see it for a while.
"Both big box office movies in one week so we thought it would be pretty busy, so we came early," Laura said.
And the reaction after watching Wicked:
"I loved it. I thought it was really good," Emilee said.
"You can tell these actors prepared really well for their role, which made it ten times more better I believe," another movie goer said.
There are showtimes for the next few weeks. We have showtimes for all movies playing in Monroe County here.
