MERCED, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A father has been arrested after his toddler found an unlocked gun and accidentally shot themself Friday night, Merced Police say. Investigators say around 4 p.m. their department received a call of a victim of a shooting.  The victim turned out to be a 2-year-old child with a self-inflicted gunshot wound after discovering the unsecured firearm inside the family's home. First responders offered immediate life-saving medical aid, but the child died at the hospital. Police say as a result of the investigation, the child's father was arrested and booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of child endangerment resulting in death. Officers would like to remind the public that firearms must be secured and properly stored to restrict access by children to prevent future tragedies.
