Before most local sports fans officially move indoors for the winter season, the 2024 high school soccer season will have two more games Sunday at Al Cowell Sr. Field in Hamilton’s Veterans Park, where the Mercer County Hall of Fame/Glenn “Mooch” Myernick Senior Games will take place. The events honor the memory of Myernick, who grew up playing soccer in Lawrence and went on to earn national and international fame, before dying suddenly 18 years ago. In fact, the Mooch Soccer Program, which gives inner-city kids in the Trenton area the opportunity to play the sport with help from high-profile coaches like Mike Van Wagner and Charlie Inverso, is one of the event’s main supporters. The games begin with a noon contest featuring senior high school girls’ soccer players from around Mercer County. Then, at 2 p.m., a similar contest featuring senior high school boys’ soccer players from around Mercer will cap the festivities. Player sign-ins to pick up jerseys will start, for the girls, at 11:30 a.m. and, for the boys, at 1:30 p.m. at a table near the field’s entrance. With help from sponsors like Mooch Soccer; the Mercer County Soccer Hall of Fame; NJM Insurance; Ciro Baldino and family of Conte’s Pizza; RSword; Richard Fornaro of Fornaro & Francioso, Counselors at Law; Dino Spadaccini of the Spadaccini Law Firm; the Ancient Order of the Hibernians; Tony Rosica & Greg Harvell of Keller Williams Premier Real Estate; Marsilio’s/Rossi’s Bar and Grill; plus Premier Key Abstract, the Mooch Senior Games will again be free to the public. The teams, coached by members of the Mercer County Soccer Hall of Fame, are divided into Red and White squads to commemorate Myernick’s school colors at Lawrence High. Like the coaches, the referees for the matches donate their time in hopes that all might enjoy one more fun day of soccer before the exciting 2024 fall season, which saw six local teams reach a sectional final, comes to a close.
