A Walnut Ave. resident who predicted the worst in April watched fears materialize before her eyes in November. “That one part of the porch collapsed several months ago. And, it probably won’t be long before the other falls down. I’m afraid the wind might bring down those houses and ours,” said Monique back in April. “And, I don’t like living next to these houses. It’s not a nice feeling pulling up in front of our house and seeing that all the time.” The other shoe dropped, so to speak, as a second porch ceiling collapsed recently on the severely- blighted 300 block of Walnut Ave. So, here’s the question. Would you live next to this crap? City officials in the past could have saved these houses and this portion of Walnut Ave. with a plan to sell them to first-time homebuyers as soon as they became vacant. Redevelopment remains our way out of the housing crisis, yet, no plans appear to exist for tackling this problem. The two homes pictured on the right face demolition which will leave more empty spaces on a block seriously challenged by poverty, vacancy, and depression.
