INDIANAPOLIS — The No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes handed the No. 5 Indiana Hoosiers their first loss of the season, winning 38-15 at Ohio Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The loss was the Hoosiers' first since Curt Cignetti took over as head coach in December.
Indiana got off to a great start. The defense forced a three-and-out to begin the game, then the offense drove 70 yards in 11 plays, scoring the first points of the game on a Ty Son Lawton 2-yard touchdown run.
Ohio State responded with a 73-yard, 15-play drive, but the Hoosiers' defense stopped running back Quinshon Judkins on a fourth-and-one from the Indiana 2-yard line.
The game began to turn on the Hoosiers' next possession. Facing a third-and-1 from their own 26-yard line, they committed a false start penalty backing them up five yards. Defensive end JT Tuimoloau sacked IU quarterback Kurtis Rourke for an 11-yard loss on the next play.
Caleb Downs returned the ensuing punt into Indiana territory. The Buckeyes scored five plays later on a 11-yard pass from quarterback Will Howard to wideout Emeka Egbuka to tie the game.
The teams would then exchange turnovers. Rourke fumbled as he was sacked by linebacker Cody Simon. Defensive lineman Ty Hamilton recovered at the Hoosiers' 18-yard line, giving Ohio State great field position. That position was spoiled when Howard gave the ball back to the Hoosiers on a Jailin Walker interception.
Indiana then made a mistake on special teams as a snap went through punter James Evans' hands. He recovered, but was brought down at the team's 7-yard line. The Buckeyes scored three plays later on a TreVeyon Henderson 4-yard touchdown run to give Ohio State a 14-7 lead at halftime.
The Hoosiers received the second half kickoff, but made another critical special teams miscue as Downs returned an Evans' punt 79 yards for a touchdowns and a 21-7 lead.
Indiana went three-and-out before the Buckeyes added to their lead with a 10-play, 75 yard drive, capped by a Howard to Jelani Thurman 1-yard touchdown pass.
Lawton scored his second touchdown of the game on a 2-run yard, and Rourke connected with Omar Cooper Jr. on the two-point conversion with under two minutes to make it 31-15.
The Hoosiers attempted an onside kick, but it went out of bounds. Henderson broke free for a 39-yard run, then Howard scored from a yard-out to provide the final margin.
The loss will most likely keep Indiana out of the Big Ten Championship Game at Lucas Oil Stadium next month. No. 1 Oregon has already clinched one of the two berths.
The Hoosiers will look to finish the regular season on a high note by reclaiming the Old Oaken Bucket from rival Purdue next week at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington.
