What will Republican leadership look like in the State House next session?
Nov 23, 2024
BOSTON (WWLP) - Republicans added a touch of purple to Massachusetts's blue legislature this election season, gaining a seat in the state senate.
While the GOP flipped three seats in total, Democrats also flipped two.
Kelly Dooner, now the Senator-elect from Taunton, will become the fifth member of the Senate's GOP Caucus--the first Republican woman senator in 20 years.
Despite this new addition, most Senate Republicans say they are not interested in a change of leadership.
Bruce Tarr, the Senator from Gloucester, is expected to stay in his role of Senate Minority Leader. Tarr, a Baker-reminiscent moderate, has served in the senate for 29 years. While Tarr himself has called talks about next term's leadership "premature," he did provide some clarity to reporters.
"I'm focused on finishing the remainder of this session. We obviously have a lot of items that are in active play," said Tarr. "But I have no plans to change course." Western Massachusetts Senator Peter Durant, who is a member of the Republican Caucus, has voiced his support for continuing under Tarr's leadership.
"I'm really happy with Bruce's leadership and I certainly have no intention of changing," said Durant. "I think he's a good leader. I think he's a fantastic leader, actually." Tarr has served as Senate minority leader since the first Obama administration.
In the next session, this now 5-person senate caucus will be up against a 35-person Democratic Caucus, with just two new elected officials.
