Rain eases fire risk but drought persists in Greenfield
Nov 23, 2024
GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The rain we have seen has been beneficial, despite wildfires still raging in parts of the state.
Even though the rain helped us out with the brush fire danger for now the drought conditions continue.
Over an inch of rain fell across western Massachusetts Thursday into Friday and despite all the recent rain, river levels are still running pretty low. You can still see the now muddy banks along the Connecticut River.
According to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor that was issued just before the rain we had, far eastern Hampshire and far southeastern Franklin County are now in the Extreme Drought Category while the rest of western Massachusetts is in the Severe Drought Category. The Massachusetts Drought Status map has all of Massachusetts except for Cape Cod in the Level 3, Critical Drought Category.
Because of the Critical Drought Conditions, non-essential outdoor water use is now banned in Greenfield until further notice.
