On October 19, 2023, deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office responded to a shooting with injuries at Penny Pantry convenience store located in the 4000 block of Breckenwood Drive.
When a deputy arrived, he saw a large crowd around an unresponsive male victim with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso in front of the store.
As the deputy waited for paramedics to arrive at the scene, he did CPR on the victim.

However, the victim was declared deceased by paramedics at 6:45 p.m.
Deputies were able to identify the victim after speaking to multiple parties on the scene.
Deputies also reviewed the camera system that showed the following:
The male victim was speaking with an unknown man outside of a red Cadillac sedan in the parking lot.
Suddenly, the victim stopped talking to the man and began walking toward the middle of the parking lot, where a thin man wearing a white jacket with black pants began to fire shots at him with an unknown firearm.
According to the police report, the victim began to run away from the suspect when he was struck and fell to the ground. The suspect proceeded to stand over the victim and fire more rounds into him.
The suspect then left the scene in a light gray Infiniti G37 bearing Mississippi tags.
Witnesses nearby the scene told deputies that the shooter goes by multiple nicknames such as "Lil Yack" and "Lil Hen."

Detectives were told that a man named Lamarious Rattler went by those nicknames.
They searched Facebook and found three profiles with Rattler as their profile pictures. They also learned that Rattler and the victim were Facebook friends, which detectives took to mean that they knew each other.
When detectives spoke to the mother of the victim's child, she told them that she was not at the scene of the shooting. However, she was told that "Yak shot the victim over him selling marijuana to someone that Yak was supposed to sell marijuana to."
She also told detectives that the two had known each other for years.
With this information, detectives prepared a six-person lineup and met with one of the nearby witnesses.
They were able to pick Rattler out of the lineup "without hesitation" and in a written statement said, "Lil Hen shot [the victim] dead with an all-black .223."
Rattler is expected to appear before a judge on Monday.
