Wickliffe plans to have Luxona Avenue catch basins addressed

Wickliffe officials are looking to address two catch basins on Luxona Avenue as part of bettering the city’s streets.
According to City Engineer Pete Formica, the basins were not part of the city’s original road program, but there was enough money in the budget to take care of them.
“The one in the ditch was not part of the program, but the issue in the cul-de-sac would be,” he said. “The cul-de-sac issue is on the punch list.”
With regard to the issue on the cul-de-sac where it is retaining water, Formica noted it is the responsibility of the contractor and they will not be paid until all of the items on the six-page punch list are completed to the city’s satisfaction.
Councilperson Matthew Jaworski noted the catch basins have been a concern, making note of the goal to make the streets better than they are.
“There should have been more crown to enable drainage, but the catch basin in the ditch was not part of the scope of the project as it is still an unimproved street,” Formica said. “The thought was that someday a curbed street would be added there and it will be raised to grade, and used.”
Formica said the basins should be addressed by Jan. 1.
The city currently has between 150 to 300 catch basins or sewers. With more development in recent years, there’s more impervious surface and less area for stormwater from increased rainfall to be soaked up naturally, according to city officials.
Impervious surfaces include highways, streets, pavement, driveways and house roofs. These surfaces can also have an effect on local streams, both in water quality and streamflow, as well as flooding characteristics, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
