The Harbor Police officers involved in a shootout with a double-homicide suspect in Little Italy were identified this week by the San Diego Police Department. Cpl. Jason Day, a six-year department veteran, and Officer Alexander Kahn, a nine-year veteran, were identified as the officers who fired their weapons at Christopher Farrell, 26, after he allegedly shot at police near Kettner Boulevard and Juniper Street on Nov. 13, San Diego police said Thursday in a release. Farrell was struck multiple times and died. Officer Patrick Lynch, who was still field training with the department, was struck in the hip by a bullet during the firefight and taken to a hospital. He did not fire his weapon, police said. A fourth Harbor Police officer was also on the scene at the time of the shooting but was identified as “a witness only” by San Diego police. Lynch “is doing well and his recovery is progressing in the right direction,” Harbor Police Chief Magda Fernandez said Thursday in a statement. “We are happy to report he is home with his family to continue his recovery,” Fernandez said. “I cannot emphasize it enough — all four of them are heroes. Their quick and decisive actions prevented any further tragedies,” she added. The shooting occurred less than an hour after Farrell allegedly shot and killed Rachael Martinez, 31, and Jose Medina, 39, a married couple, as they sat in a vehicle  downtown near the San Diego Superior Courthouse. Court records show that Martinez and Medina had both sought and were granted temporary restraining orders against Farrell and were due to appear in court that morning for hearings. Martinez and Farrell had been involved in a brief affair that ended, according to statements made by Martinez in court documents. After a confrontation between Medina and Farrell in October, Martinez traveled to Farrell’s home in an encounter that allegedly ended in sexual assault. Martinez eventually reported the incident to police, after which time Farrell was arrested and fired from his security job. Martinez and Medina filed restraining order requests soon after, but court records indicate the orders were not served successfully.
