St. John Fisher students pen bilingual children's book for RCSD classes

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WROC) - Two St. John Fisher University students are bringing the gift of reading to Rochester city schools with a story all their own that is written in two languages.
What started as poetry and prose has turned into a passion project for Fisher juniors Marissa Terech and Emma Muchow.
"Marissa started with the bilingual poems because she was doing it for a class project. We started very small and then she came to me and I was like, 'Wait. What if I illustrated this and we made it a book?'" said Muchow.
The Buffalo natives are roommates, close friends, and now, they are published authors.
Terech and Muchow have brought their short stories to the classroom with "Mia La Cerdita," where they have introduced Rochester students to insightful tales in English and Spanish.
"Especially going into a bilingual classroom and being able to speak their first language with them, that brings a different level of intimacy and closeness. It's really great to share that with them," said Terech.
With support from the Rochester Education Foundation, the girls have supplied RCSD's Schools No. 12 and No. 28 with 200 books. They have also donated one to each elementary library within the district.
"Being able to go into these classrooms and share these stories, let them hug our little Mia, and feel so empowered by the morals of the stories, is all we could ever dream of," said Terech.
"I think the biggest thing, too, is going into the schools to see the kids look at us and be like, 'Wow. They're college students and they're doing this.' It's kind of an inspiring thing," said Muchow.
Muchow and Terech have built a brand with "Pigtales and Poemas with Mia La Cerdita." They have a website complete with merchandise to match, all based on the work.
For those interested in gifting the book to students or loved ones, it is also available on Amazon.
