SERIES HISTORY: Bucknell leads, 31-26. The Broncs and Bison split a pair of games a week apart in 2021-22, with Bucknell taking the first meeting, 81-74, at home before Rider evened the score with an 85-79 victory on in the Cancun Challenge. The two programs were Middle Atlantic Conference and East Coast Conference foes from the 60’s into the early 1990’s.
KENPOM RANKING: Rider 248; Bucknell 226
SCOUTING RIDER: The Broncs are coming off a disappointing effort against Iowa in which they turned the ball over 20 times and shot 1-for-16 from 3. Those numbers gave them no chance to compete against a high-major opponent. Rider is conceding 15 points per game off turnovers. The Broncs should be able to score against a Bucknell team that is giving up 79.1 points per game. After being held to five points against Iowa, look for T.J. Weeks Jr. (13.8 points, 36.7% from 3) to try and get going early.
SCOUTING BUCKNELL: The connections between the Bison program and Mercer County run deep. Head coach John Griffin III is a former Rider assistant, his brother Matt, an assistant coach, played two seasons at Rider and was a team captain, and director of basketball operations Mike Walley was a standout at Notre Dame High and TCNJ. Griffin is in his second season at his alma mater — he scored over 1,000 points during four years in which the team went 85-42 overall — and finished tied for second in the Patriot League last year. So far this season, the Bison are 4-2 and coming off victories over Richmond and NJIT. They have already played a pair of double overtime games at home; losing to Rider’s MAAC rival Mount St. Mary’s in a game in which they blew a big lead; and then beating Richmond in a game in which they rallied from a big deficit. Bucknell is led by 7-foot center Noah Williamson at 18.3 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.0 blocks. Josh Bascoe (15.2 points), Ian Motta (12.4 points) and Ruot Bijiek (10.2 points) also average in double figures. The Bison average 80.3 points per game.
