NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — The second phase of an affordable housing development in North Kingstown officially broke ground Friday as part of a statewide effort to address the ongoing housing crisis.
Community leaders, including U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, celebrated the start of Phase II of the Reynolds Farm Project, which will add 40 new units for residents 55 years and older.
"We have a crisis in affordable housing, but the critical thing is not just to recognize it, but to fix it," Reed said.
Reed noted that the majority of the project is funded by federal money, including $1.3 million from the Housing Trust Fund. He emphasized that more than a quarter of the units are reserved for individuals with the lowest income, those most at risk of homelessness.
"What we've found, unfortunately, is, that homelessness is growing overall throughout the entire population, but it's really growing for seniors," Reed added. "That's why this is a very important investment."

The Valley Affordable Housing Corporation and the R.I. Department of Housing were also recognized for their efforts in bringing the project to fruition after years of planning to meet the state's growing need for housing.
"This is a significant moment for the state, not just because we're building homes, but because we're building the right kind of homes—homes that are affordable, accessible, thoughtfully designed," said Daniel Connors, the state's interim housing secretary.

Eleven units will be reserved for those earning at or below 30% of the area median income.
"Today our goal goes beyond bricks and mortar. We are committed to fostering vibrant, healthy communities," Valley Board President Paul Gagne said. "Today's groundbreaking reflects this mission in action ensuring seniors in our state have access to stable and supportive homes where they can thrive."
The project is expected to be completed by 2026.
