Dry and milder weather on tap for the weekend
Nov 22, 2024
Mother Nature gave us an early taste of winter across Central and Eastern Kentucky with a light blanket of snow falling late Thursday and into early Friday. Most locations picked up around 1″ of snow here in the Bluegrass Region with closer to 2″ totals reported into the mountains of Southeastern Kentucky. Luckily road temperatures were warm enough to prevent any travel issues other than a few slick spots on the bridges and overpasses. The snow melted off pretty quickly with a few spotty rain showers hanging around through the day as afternoon highs worked back into the low 40s but a breezy west to northwest wind made it feel even colder.
Heading into the weekend we’ll dry things out across the region but expect the stubborn low level cloud cover to hang tough on Saturday. Even with high pressure building in from the west, it may take the better part of the day to scour out the cloudiness so expect a mostly cloudy Saturday but we will at least be precipitation free. Afternoon highs will still be on the cool side for late November with temperatures topping into the upper 40s but winds will finally back off after several breezy days.
The second half of the weekend looks much better as sunshine returns on Sunday. A southwest flow will pick up as high pressure sets up to our southeast. The combination of the sunshine and southwest wind will push afternoon highs into the upper 50s so it should feel much better if you have anything on tap outdoors. Another frontal system will slide into the region to kick off Thanksgiving week with rain and a few rumbles of thunder possible as afternoon highs surge into the low 60s despite the rain and clouds around.
Cooler air will filter in behind the front so expect a cooler Tuesday but we should be dry across the area with sunshine back in the picture. Afternoon highs will be chilly into the mid-40s even with a mostly sunny day on tap. Heading toward the travel day Wednesday and Thanksgiving a wave of low pressure will slide eastward into the Ohio Valley so our rain chances will return beginning late Wednesday. Even though we are still a few days out it looks to be a damp Thanksgiving Day with a chilly rain and highs remaining in the mid-40s. A reinforcing shot of colder air may work in for Black Friday behind the departing wave so any leftover moisture could be a rain/snow mix so we’ll keep an eye on the trend in the coming days.
