AMHERST TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WJW) — Investigators have identified a mother and child who were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide in Amherst Township.
According to a press release from the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office, firefighters responded to the home around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. They found the bodies of Risa Louks, 46, and Alex Louks, 9.
Investigators said Risa Louks shot her son Alex in the chest before attempting to set their home on fire. The sheriff said Risa Louks then turned the gun on herself.
A handgun was recovered at the scene.
The Lorain County Sheriff’s Office said Risa Louks was facing a custody battle with Alex’s father. Court records indicate the latest hearing in the case was supposed to take place on Nov. 25 in Henry County, Indiana.
Alex's father filed an emergency petition for temporary custody on Nov. 13. An initial, one-hour hearing in the case was held on Nov. 18.
Investigators said no further information on the incident will be released at this time. Police said there is no prior call history associated with the family.
