ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The past few winter seasons, Rochester has been seeing below average snowfall totals, with the last two barely seeing half of what we normally average. Looking back at the last 10 total snowfall totals, only 4 were right at average or above average. So we decided to take the average cost of a paper plow and the average cost of a snow plow contract and do a little bit of research with it. The numbers we came up with we said around $50 for a pay per plow and around $500 for that, you have to remember that in order for these people to come out and essentially take care of your property during a snow event we have to see at least 3 inches on the ground.  Let’s do a little bit of math before getting into the research so we said $500 for that snow plow contract $50 per plow. If you were to take these two numbers divide them by each other. We get 10 so essentially that means we have to see 10 events of 3 inches plus in order to break even if you were to purchase that’s snow plow contract. Let’s take a look at the last 10 seasons here in Rochester so we saw some some seasons. We had a lot of events with some that we didn’t see a whole lot and you have to remember when we’re conducting this research we are looking at singular day totals we’re not looking at storm totals so we’re looking from 12:01 AM to 11:59 PM on a singular day to see if we had reached 3 inches or more and you can see the big number there are 15 events that was our most amount of events in the season of 2017 and 2018 and our lowest amount of events just happened recently in 2022, 2023 when we only saw two events. We decided to put numbers to this or price as we could say and you see the big green one that really pops up on your screen from the 2017 2018 season or people actually made money essentially and got their moneys worth now the rest of them yes we did lose some money but you got to remember we were saying that 10 is that break even point and some of that we had eight or nine events so essentially they were very close to breaking that even point
