Wichita man sentenced in connection to fatal shooting

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - A Wichita man has been sentenced in connection to a fatal shooting last June.
Damion Hazelton was sentenced to 180 months in prison and ordered to register as a violent offender upon release. The judge imposed the maximum sentence.

Hazelton had previously pleaded no contest and was found guilty of four felony counts: Involuntary manslaughter, aggravated burglary of a vehicle, felon in possession of a firearm, and interference with law enforcement.
On June 23, 2023, police were dispatched to the 7000 block of E. Lincoln St. after receiving multiple reports of a vehicle collision and a shooting.
Upon arrival, officers located a red SUV that had crashed into the building. Inside the vehicle was 49-year-old Chris Baker with a gunshot wound to the right side of his head. He died on the scene.
According to court documents, surveillance video shows that Baker was inside his SUV that was parked in front of a residence when he was shot. Hazelton ran, and Baker drove off, crashing into a nearby building.
Court documents state that witnesses saw Hazelton remove items from the SUV after the crash. He was also seen on surveillance video dropping items near apartments, including a watch pillow. Officers located an empty watch box inside the SUV.

Hazelton was located the next day and arrested without incident.
