The Philadelphia Union announced Thursday they have reached agreement with defender Olivier Mbaizo on a new contract. The 27-year-old is guaranteed to be under contract through 2026 with options for 2027 and 2028. “Olivier has been a consistent contributor to our backline since joining us in 2018,” Union sporting director Ernst Tanner said in a statement. “His speed and agility, along with his increasingly accurate passing percentage, continue to make him a valuable asset to the team and we are happy to have come to an agreement.” Mbaizo appeared in 21 games for the Union last season, starting 12 of them. He registered two assists, and completed a career-high pass accuracy mark of 82.1% (340 of 414). On June 19 he recorded his 12th MLS assist in his 100th MLS game, against FC Cincinnati. Signed by the Union in 2018, Mbaizo, from Cameroon, spent the bulk of his first two seasons with the organization developing with Bethlehem Steel (subsequently renamed Union II). Internationally, he has earned 14 caps for Cameroon.
