HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - The future of Holyoke is in the hands of the community as the city held its third listening session on Thursday.

The community got to speak one-on-one with the planning commission and the mayor focusing on the city's growth and sustainability. "This is the shared vision that came from the people, it wasn't the mayor and I in the back room thinking this is what the city needs," shared Aaron Vega, Director, of Holyoke Office of Economic Development. The comprehensive plan will feature a blueprint designed for the city's next 20 years focusing on housing, transportation, and economic development. The youth also got to share their vision for Holyoke and put it on pen and paper. Homelessness and addiction are a top concern for the city's youth. Meanwhile, affordable housing and green energy businesses is also on the minds of many. "I'm a scientist and an educator, and I'm looking to see if I can help Holyoke do more,," shared Adam Lamee. "And then I also want to see more places for people to get into the outdoors," shared Kristen Sykes. Holyoke's comprehensive plan has not been updated since 1999. City officials want residents to craft a plan that reflects the community's needs and aspirations. "We're leaning towards green energy companies and green technologies coming to Holyoke that want to build on that," shared Aaron Vega, Director, of Holyoke Office of Economic Development. If you weren't able to attend the public input sessions you can still be a part of the planning. Click here to participate in a survey with the City of Holyoke.
