Convenient store owners are condemning the Northampton Board of Health's proposal to move all nicotine pouch sales to adult-only stores. In a virtual public hearing tonight, local retailers argue that this regulation will impact business.Retailers argue that they follow the law, checking and scanning IDs prior to any purchase of tobacco. Others say moving the product from one store to another is unfair. "Yes, they are nicotine products but as the FDA will say nicotine is not a carcinogen. It may be addictive, but people may enjoy it and we feel that adults have the right to make their own choices," shared Peter Brennan, Executive Director, of New England Convenience Store. The Northampton Board of Health says five stores sold to minors just last year. Retailers now have until the 1st of the year to sell their products. A letter along with a copy of the new regulation will also be sent to all the impacted businesses.
