His attorney's say he was acting in self defense, adding that the killing could have been avoided if Howard didn't threaten Fitzpatrick. The defense attorney's office agreed to give Fitzpatrick a plea deal, charging him with voluntary manslaughter instead of first degree murder. Judge Stanley Whitaker gave him the maximum sentence of eight years. [2] Despite hot classroom complaints, ABQ parents want school calendar to stay the same - After complaints of a lack of working air conditioning in classrooms, a new APS survey asked parents if the district should push back school’s start to late August when temperatures drop. Nearly 13,000 people responded, 78% voted to keep the early August start. The same survey indicated that parents consider upgrades to heating and cooling systems as a top priority for the district. The district said it will recommend keeping the current early August school start. APS says upgrading air conditioners would cost tens of millions of dollars per school.
