Two women arrested in animal cruelty case
Nov 22, 2024
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Lexington Police have arrested two family members accused of abandoning their dogs after moving out of their home earlier this year.
ABC36 News first reported in July, Catherine Meriwether, Ariana Meriwether, and Demetrius Clay were wanted on animal cruelty charges. According to investigators, the family allegedly left two dogs trapped in crates without food or water after moving out of their residence on Emerson Drive. One of the dogs tragically died due to the conditions.
Lexington-Fayette Animal Care and Control reported that the Meriwethers were arrested Wednesday following an anonymous tip from a concerned community member.
Officials emphasized that cases like this are now being prosecuted under “Ethan’s Law,” which reclassifies certain animal cruelty offenses as felonies. The law, named after a dog that survived severe abuse, was passed to strengthen protections for animals in Kentucky.
This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
