MentorontheLake Police urge residents to fill out registry after autistic 3yearold found unattended
Nov 22, 2024
A non-verbal 3-year-old child was located unattended by the Mentor-on-the-Lake Police Department on Andrews Road on Nov. 18.
According to a Mentor-on-the-Lake Police Department Facebook post, officers took a report of a child unattended near the roadway in the 5800 block of Andrews Road.
The 3-year-old girl was located and brought safely to the police department.
It was found that the child was autistic and non-verbal and could not tell officers who her parents were or where she lived. Officers knocked on doors and spoke to apartment management offices until they were able to locate her mother.
This incident is an open investigation, and charges are pending.
Mentor-on-the-Lake Police noted that the department has established an Autism/Special Needs Registry. In cases like this, a completed registry would have helped significantly in identifying the child quickly, according to the post. If a child is lost, a picture would be readily available for officers to attempt to locate that juvenile and hopefully prevent a tragedy from occurring.
If anyone has a family member with special needs or autism who reside in Mentor-on-the-Lake, police ask them to take the time to complete the registry. It can be found online on the city website or it can be picked up and completed 24/7 at the police department.
If residents complete the form digitally from the website, it can be emailed to Lt. Tina Messinger at [email protected].
