Hawaii actress Auli'i Cravalho returns to voice Moana, and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson reprises his role as Maui in the sequel, which continues to explore the rich cultural themes introduced in the first film. "It's so important," Spencer said. "What we love to do is find parts of the world that maybe haven't been told in the world of animation because animation is for everybody— from someone who is 3 years old to someone who is 80 years old. When we start to tell these stories, we spend a lot of time building cultural trust to make sure we're accurately portraying these communities. It's incredibly important."
