EVANGELINE PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- A 41-year-old woman is accused of child cruelty after a 3-year-old boy was hospitalized after eating a "large amount" of CBD gummies which caused him to go in and out of a "coma-like" state, according to authorities. In a news release, the Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office said Felicia Welch, the child's custodial mother, was charged with one count of second-degree cruelty to a juvenile. Her bond was set at $25,000. The charge originates from a complaint that the sheriff's office received om Oct. 28 from the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) about a toddler who had been admitted to a hospital in Alexandria. According to the news release, DCFS learned from the hospital the toddler was in and out of a "coma-like" state after eating a large amount of CBD gummies. The child was allegedly in the care of his custodial mother. "During the investigation, it was learned that the suspect had no intentions of bringing the child to the hospital and was pressured by friends and family to do so.  The child was treated in ICU for several days where he later gained a full recovery and was placed in another home," the sheriff's office said.
