Owner who left 10 puppies in trunk sentenced
Nov 21, 2024
(COLORADO SPRINGS) —The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region (HSPPR) said a single surviving puppy from a litter of 10 that was found emaciated and covered in feces in a car trunk is thriving in her forever home, and the owner who left her and her littermates in the trunk has been brought to justice.
According to HSPPR, Animal Law Enforcement (ALE) officers received a call in 2023 about an unknown number of dogs left in the trunk of a car. When officers arrived on scene, they could hear the sound of desperate cries coming from the trunk of the car.

Inside the trunk, officers found 10 severely neglected puppies, and only three were still alive. HSPPR said all of the puppies were critically underweight, and with no muscle or fat, their bones were visible through their skin. The living puppies were dehydrated, hypothermic, and covered in urine and feces.
Although the three surviving puppies were taken to HSPPR and given emergency medical care, only one survived. Named Griselda by the HSPPR staff, the surviving puppy began showing signs of improvement with round-the-clock care. Once she was strong enough, Griselda was placed with one of HSPPR's staff members, Allison, who became the puppy's foster mom.

Months later, Griselda—now named Bits—found her family.
"The joy of seeing her healthy and thriving was overwhelming, and we celebrated this beautiful triumph of life over tragedy," HSPPR said.
HSPPR also reported that through extensive efforts by the ALE team, including over 20 home visits and at least 90 hours spent investigating the case, the original owner who locked the puppies in the trunk was brought to justice.
The owner received 60 days in jail, $13,000 in restitution, additional fines, 26 mandatory counseling sessions, an animal cruelty prevention course, and no animal contact for five years.
As for Bits, HSPPR said it had the privilege of reuniting with her recently when she came in to the Wellness Center for a check-up and some vaccines. HSPPR said Bits bounded into the room, eager to reunite with her foster mom, Allison.

"We know that the beginning of Bits' story is incredibly sad and truly horrific. But rather than focus on the act of cruelty that she came from, we choose to focus on the beautiful life she gets to live today," HSPPR said. "We are grateful to our ALE officers who rescued her, our veterinary team who healed her, our foster family who offered their home to her, and the family who adopted her and gave her a wonderful life."
