BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — With very cold temperatures on the way, the chances of getting frostbite will be increasing. Exposed skin can freeze within minutes, especially on your fingers, toes, and nose. These areas are at the highest risk, and if not protected quickly, they can suffer permanent damage. Each year, over 1,000 lives are lost to frostbite and other cold-related conditions. Experts say the best defense is layering up so much that you cover every inch of skin, and avoiding the cold whenever possible. Winter activities you can do if you are stuck at home "Don't go outside when it's really cold. Or if you have to go outside, make sure you're dressed appropriately for the weather," said Dr. J'Patrick Fahn, Chief Medical Officer at CHI St. Alexius Health. "Wear mittens, wear gloves, wear warm socks, wear a cap, put a face covering on. Not the kind that prevents illness, but the kind that just keeps you warm, to prevent you from getting a cold-related injury." When you do venture outside, watch for signs like numbness or pale skin, and act fast if those signs are there. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
