BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects there will be 3.3 million registered nurses in 2032. In the Baton Rouge area, the Baton Rouge General School of Nursing is seeing an increase in graduates.
The Baton Rouge General School of Nursing has been in the community since 1965. Since then, they have been cranking out graduates. The school even holds two commencement ceremonies for graduates.
"Post Covid we had a slight dip for a very short period of time, but our numbers are all back to where they were previously," said Linda Markey, director, Baton Rouge General School of Nursing.
Markey said the program is the fastest in the region and the only hospital-based diploma program in the state.

"We have the opportunity to put a student into the role of a registered nurse in 16 months," said Markey.
Lindsey Liles is a recent graduate. She decided later in life to become a nurse.
"It was great because I do have three kids. I was able to bring them to school almost every day, pick them up almost every day, so we had class a lot, but at the same time it wasn't overwhelming," said Liles
Liles said she chose to attend Baton Rouge General's School of Nursing because the program was only 16 months. She also said she received a well-rounded education and feels ready to enter the workforce. Liles graduated in October 2024 from the program.
