Rain and wind ripped across the DMV last night, bringing in the much colder air we're feeling today. There were plenty of clear skies directly behind the front this morning, but that is gone this afternoon as the next wave of precipitation arrives. Clouds and light rain slowly push east from along the I-81 corridor toward the I-95 corridor, making it gloomy and a bit soggy for some. Across the mountains, it's a different world as bursts of snow have started and will continue into tonight. Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories continue across the highest terrain in western MD and WV as this snow event continues to unfold through the end of the week. Gusty winds will kick up again tonight, sending temperatures tumbling into the 20s and 30s. Wind chills will be in the teens and 20s to begin the day tomorrow, so be prepared to bundle up as you head out. The other threat we're tracking closely is the next burst of precipitation that will arrive with these colder temperatures. Snow will start up again across the mountains, but it will likely be cold enough for a wet snow/rain mix across Northern VA and MD to the east. This mix will only last for a few hours before temperatures rise, causing everything to switch over to rain and keep things soggy into Friday afternoon. With the quick switch and warm ground below, snow isn't expected to stick or cause problems outside the mountains. The only locations west of the Allegheny Mountains that will see accumulations will be across the South Mountain corridor and Catoctins, where an inch or two could stick in the highest elevations. Rounds of steady to heavy snow will continue across western MD and WV in the much colder setup until Saturday morning, leading to up to a foot of snow in some spots. The highest elevations above 3000 feet in Garrett County could see over a foot of snow. This mess of a storm system will finally be out of our hair this weekend, with things clearing up on Saturday. Some breezy winds will still be around through the day before calming down Saturday night. High pressure will be nearby on Sunday, giving us sunny skies and slightly warmer temperatures in the 50s. This warming trend will continue into Monday, with highs returning to the lower 60s. The next storm system arrives on Tuesday, bringing rain showers and cooler air as we head toward Thanksgiving. Speaking of Thanksgiving, the weather pattern will remain active into the holiday weekend, so we'll watch the extended forecast closely in the coming days. Stay safe and warm out there, and have a great rest of your Thursday! 7-Day Forecast: Today: Mostly cloudy and windy with mountain snow to the west and spotty rain showers to the east.
