CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - More families in Hampden County will be able to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal this year, thanks to a turkey drive, organized by a coalition of small business owners and local elected officials.
State Senator Adam Gomez turkey drive is helping hundreds of families in the area have a traditional Thanksgiving meal to enjoy. The drive has been distributing turkeys throughout the week at various locations with today's distribution taking place at the Boys and Girls Club in Chicopee. A truck filled with 100 turkeys were being handed out to families in need.
Organizers say this drive is a much needed-relief for many families who are facing food insecurity, during these challenging times. "We put these drives in the middle of neighborhoods where folks can walk to the drive and be able to obtain a turkey. And, you know, giving back during this holiday season, especially with food and inflation, we understand how hard it is to probably just have a Thanksgiving meal. We just want to give that opportunity to residents that qualify," said Senator Gomez.
During the course of the whole week, they will be distributing 1,000 turkeys. The turkey drive does end on November 23rd. Their next stop will be Friday at the Indian Orchard Citizens Council at 11am.
Turkeys will be served on a first come first serve basis, but the drive will be trying its best to serve as many families as possible.
