CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP)-- Thanksgiving is now a week away and many people are shopping for their holiday feast. For the second year in a row American families can expect to spend less on Thanksgiving dinner, but the cost is still almost 20% higher than before the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019. Eastern States Exposition donates beef to local food pantries The American Farm Bureau Federation's annual survey found that a classic dinner for ten persons will cost $58.08 this year, a 5% decrease from 2023 and down from a record high of $64.05 in 2022. This year's decline in part due to lower turkey prices, which have dropped 6% from last year. These lower turkey prices coming despite a bird flu outbreak that affected more than 100 million birds since March. Experts say the American turkey flock is the smallest it's been since 1985 because of the outbreak, but demand has fallen, resulting in lower prices. Other Thanksgiving staples, like sweet potatoes, vegetables and pumpkin pie mix are also more affordable while some other items have become more expensive. Dinner rolls and cubed stuffing saw an 8% increase due to higher labor costs. Cranberry prices have also shot up, almost 12% year over year. And while American families may still feel the pressures of inflation this holiday season, the AFBF's report is a promising sign that they are finally seeing some relief at the grocery store. Government data shows since January 2021, grocery bills are up more than 22% but the rise in grocery prices has slowed significantly since the start of 2024.
