Bethesda 1 win from second straight state championship
Nov 21, 2024
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Not many people outside of the Bethesda Academy thought that they would be one win away from defending their state title after the first two weeks of the season.
The reigning state champions were 0-2 and starting quarter Luke Larson was done for the year after a season ending injury. However, Coach Antwain Turner and his crew did not panic. They brought in freshman quarterback Jordan Turner and have won eight of their last nine games, which includes last week's semifinal matchup where they trailed 21-8 in third quarter.
This Saturday, they play a familiar foe, Pee Dee Academy. Back on Oct. 25, Bethesda lost to Pee Dee, 25-22, in a game that wound up deciding the region champion.
At this point for the state championship game," Turner said. "It really doesn't matter who you play. But because we've played them before, it gives us an opportunity to kind of know what we're up against and know the mistakes that we've made. We want to correct those mistakes. The biggest thing coming into the game is focusing on how can we get to the next level ourselves."
Junior wide receiver Raleigh Wesley said, "The atmosphere there is great. When we don't really have to worry about that now because we're used to it. So, it's really just go out and play like a regular game."
Bethesda and Pee Dee Academy will play this Saturday at Charleston Southern for the Class AA SCISA Championship.
