RUIDOSO, N.M. (KRQE) – After devastating fires and flooding, the village of Ruidoso said business is slowly returning to normal but there are still many hurdles ahead. During the summer, businesses saw as much as a 90% drop in sales. The village chamber of commerce said some businesses had to close their doors. "We lost a few members that just couldn't make it through the fire season. The ones that closed down closed down quickly," said Deborah Douds, Ruidoso Valley Chamber of Commerce. "We expect people to come back. The floods made them a little fearful. But now that they know everything's better, flood mitigation in order. We're doing things that need to be done. I really feel like the holiday season will be great." said Lori Robertson, Owner of 25th in Mid. Ruidoso Mayor Lynn Crawford said businesses lost millions of dollars this summer. He hopes the village can secure grants to help business owners. "To date we are down a little over 2 million dollars in revenue. That's about almost 20 percent of our annual income," said Mayor Crawford. The mayor said retail is still slower than usual but business is picking up. He wants to remind tourists they are still here. "The businesses are open and they need your business," said Mayor Crawford. The chamber of commerce said there is a recovery fund for businesses.
