Police say witnesses told them the two men were arguing when Martinez hit Russell Werner in the chest with an AR-style rifle and fired. Prosecutors said he shot Werner in the chest with a rifle inside an apartment near Second St. and Candelaria because of a fight over air conditioning repairs. They said Martinez tried to intimidate several people to help cover up the crime before transporting the body himself by wrapping it in carpet and taking it to the area of I-25 and Montgomery. Martinez left to Las Vegas, New Mexico where he ultimately arrested by police.
Martinez pleaded guilty to second degree murder and tampering with evidence. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
