REHOBOTH, Mass. (WLNE) — A truck rollover on Interstate 195 East in Rehoboth saw a tri-axle dump truck flipped in the air after a tire blew out, crossing busy lanes of travel before coming to rest in the median.
“I heard someone saying, ‘Are you okay, are you okay? Where are you?’ I realized I was gushing blood out of my head,” East Freetown resident Kyle Grenier said. “I looked for a way to get out and Jay was on one side of the truck.”
Grenier said he thanks Swansea resident Jay Caetano, calling him a life-saver.
Caetano said he was driving from work in Swansea to Pawtucket to pick up a few things and that he was the first one to stop to help.
“We sat down at a tree that was in the lane that I was in actually,” Caetano said. “I didn’t have anything with me so I took my shirt off and put it on where the biggest laceration was on the side and held the blood back. Because I knew you have to stop that first.”
Caetano served eight years in the Marines and 19 in the Army.
“In my eyes its just basic common sense first aid, it’s noting fancy I did, not a big deal, just stopping blood,” he said.
Grenier said the rescue was a “big deal” to him, however, and thanked Caetano for his actions.
Grenier later found a Columbus Energies shirt that Caetano took off his back to help him on the scene, then reached out to the company to connect the dots and figure out who stopped to help.
“If a lot of people did a little bit, it would make a big difference then just one person doing a lot,” Caetano said. “If everyone did a little bit we would be alright.”
