McKee taps Deborah Goddard as new housing secretary

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Gov. Dan McKee has nominated Deborah Goddard to be the state's new housing secretary.
"Deborah Goddard is a deeply committed and accomplished housing professional whose work has benefitted people from all backgrounds," McKee said. "Housing affordability and availability in Rhode Island have never been more important than they are right now."
Goddard, if confirmed, would replace former R.I. Senate Majority Leader Daniel Connors, who was serving in an interim capacity after Stefan Pryor stepped down earlier this year.
Connors had no intention of serving as the permanent secretary and didn't apply for the job.

Goddard currently leads a consulting firm, DJ Goddard Consulting, based out of Massachusetts. Before being selected, she also was the New York City Housing Authority's executive vice president for capital projects for three years.
"Secure, safe, and affordable housing creates the foundation for positive outcomes in education, health, and economic prosperity," Goddard said. "With this principle in mind, my career has been dedicated to creating and preserving housing opportunities across the income spectrum, for the unhoused, for renters and homeowners, alike, with attention to equity."
"I am honored and excited to have this opportunity to advance a housing agenda for Rhode Island that is inclusive, comprehensive, and transparent," she continued.
TARGET 12: More coverage of RI's housing crisis
Goddard was also general counsel for the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development.
House Speaker Joe Shekarchi, who has made building more housing a priority of his, said he met with Goddard "for the first time yesterday" and that she "was very impressive."
“Housing remains a critical issue to me, as well as the members of the House of Representatives and the people of Rhode Island," Shekarchi added. "We have made great progress in addressing the housing crisis, including the passage of an historic housing bond earlier this month, and we must keep our feet on the gas pedal."
The nomination now heads to the Rhode Island Senate for approval. A Senate spokesperson said there isn't a timeline yet for a confirmation vote.
