Big Blue Bug's holiday lighting to feature woman who named it
Nov 21, 2024
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — To kick off the holiday season, Nibbles Woodaway—better known as the Big Blue Bug that overlooks I-95 in Providence—will light up during the 32nd annual holiday lighting ceremony on Monday.
This year’s special guest lighter is 87-year-old Geraldine Perry, the woman who gave the iconic critter its name.
In 1990, Perry entered a contest to name the larger-than-life insect that has become a Rhode Island pop culture icon.
Burrowing into a Rhode Island icon: What is the Big Blue Bug?
Among nearly 1,000 submissions, her entry, Nibbles Woodaway, was chosen.
The ceremony will also honor Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island for their work supporting children across the state.
The lighting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 25, in the parking lot of Big Blue Bug Solutions.
The event will be live-streamed on Facebook and feature appearances by Lite 105, iHeart Radio, and local social media influencers, content creators and photographers.
