Concern grows around empty CPKC seats at NWSL Championship
Nov 21, 2024
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Ticket prices for Saturday night's National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Championship match have dropped as the Orlando Pride take on the Washington Spirit.
Despite the Current not making it to the Championship match, it's still happening at CPKC Stadium.
Around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, November 21, FOX4 found one resale ticket on Seat Geek for only $34 total. That same ticket was just $23 before fees.
"Maybe they bought them because they wanted to see the Current, and now that they're out, maybe they're looking to offload their tickets," Senior Vice President of Ticket Operations at Tickets For Less Jason Durbin said.
"That's where a lot of times we might come in handy to help with that."
Could Marquise “Hollywood” Brown be back in time for the playoffs?
Seat Geek, the ticketing partner of the Current, declined to speak with FOX4 on Thursday. Tickets For Less is also selling tickets to Saturday night's event.
Posts on Facebook show several fans still hopeful the stadium will be full for Saturday's match. KC Current fan Emily Taylor is still going to the match despite her team not being in it.
"There's a Kansas City Current Supporters group," Taylor explained.
"People are like, 'Oh I just hope people still go' I've seen a lot of resale tickets. I mean, I hope it's full. I think that will be. I don't want it to be embarrassing for our city."
Durbin said there could be a lot of empty seats Saturday night after the KC Current lost 3-2 to the Orlando Pride in their NWSL Semifinal match.
"I could see a lot of people that maybe bought in anticipation of having the Current you know, and then maybe you know, losing some interest over the week and maybe not making it out," he continued.
FOX4's Harold Kuntz was able to ask KC Current Founder Angie Long about the concern on whether there will be empty seats.
"This is the championship, right?" Long asked in response.
"I mean, people go to the Super Bowl if their team's not in it. Obviously, we're sad our team's not in it. We really would have wanted that, but Kansas City is a huge soccer town, and they're so excited to go to the game and watch this championship get played."
Saturday night's match is sold out, but Durbin says the question is whether the seats will "all get used."
