INDIANAPOLIS -- A new coalition is calling for safe and regulated marijuana policy in the state of Indiana. Safe and Regulated Indiana is a group that is centered on raising awareness for lawmakers in the state of Indiana to pass marijuana-related legislation. The group is a coalition of Hoosiers that are advocating for the regulation and taxation of marijuana like tobacco and alcohol, including individuals, business owners, veterans and advocates from across Indiana. "It's time Indiana. Time to tax and regulate marijuana for adults 21 and up just like alcohol," the group said in an advertisement on its website. "Regulating marijuana means hundreds of millions in new tax revenue for law enforcement, money we are losing when Hoosiers buy marijuana out of state. Braun transition team outlines restructuring of Indiana executive branch "Legalization creates safe markets, puts drug dealers out of business and allows cops to focus on violent crimes," the advertisement continued. "Let's do this the right way. Tell your legislator it's time for safe and regulated marijuana." In the group's view, legalization of marijuana in the state of Indiana would generate hundreds of millions in tax revenue for law enforcement and mental health services, as well as cities, towns and counties in the state. Legalization could also create thousands of job opportunities in Indiana. A safe, regulated marijuana market, in the group's view, would also ensure that the substances would be tested for potency and contaminants, protecting the individuals who purchase the product. "By legalizing and regulating marijuana, we would save lives by making marijuana safe,lab-tested, and sold in stores – not the street," the group's website said. Gov.-elect Braun outlines agenda to Indiana General Assembly on Organization Day As of this year, 24 states, including Ohio, Michigan and Illinois, have legalized marijuana. The group believes that Indiana can learn what parts of legalization have worked and what hasn't, stressing that it is time for "Indiana to do it in the best way for Hoosiers." "Tell state legislators it’s time to legalize marijuana in Indiana so we can regulate it, protect our youth, and stop losing revenue to neighboring states," the coalition said. During the gubernatorial campaign, Gov.-elect Mike Braun said he would listen to law enforcement about potential marijuana legalization, stressing that medical marijuana is "something that makes sense."
