INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The first snow of the season started falling in the early hours of Thursday morning across central Indiana, and a second round, with much heavier snow in some areas, arrived during the afternoon.
Crews from the Indianapolis Department of Public Works and the Indiana Department of Transportation were treating the roads.
A winter weather advisory was in place for much of central and eastern Indiana until 10 p.m. Thursday.
5:15 p.m.
From the National Weather Service at Wilmington, Ohio, which serves parts of east-central and southeast Indiana: Much of our area is already getting some light snow, and the snow may get a little heavier over the next few hours — particularly for the Cincinnati tri-state area.
5:12 p.m.
Indiana Department of Transportation reports a crash on I-70 EB between state roads 3 and 103, in the Spiceland area. The right lane has been closed.
5 p.m.
From Storm Track 8: Light-moderate to more spotty instances of heavy snow rates are ongoing. Use some caution on the roads the next few hours. Expect a gradual drop-off in precipitation coverage starting from 7-8 p.m.
4:53 p.m.
Special weather statement from the National Weather Service in Louisville, Kentucky: A storm system will move through the region this evening, and will bring several hours of light to occasionally moderate snow. Minor coatings of snow are possible on grassy and elevated surfaces, but impacts to roadways are not expected given ground, road, and air temperatures above freezing. It will still be a good idea to use caution while driving this evening, especially when snow is falling.
4:41 p.m.
From the National Weather Service at Indianapolis: Widespread light to moderate snow is happening across central Indiana. Look for snow to continue shifting southeastward into the evening with snow tapering off late Thursday evening into Thursday night. Additional snowfall accumulations around 1 to possibly 2 inches are expected.

From Storm Track 8: Snow has floated into the southern third of the state over the last hour. Road temps are dropping near and north of I-70. The only new snow report that’s come in the last hour was from Marion in Grant County. 2.5 inches.
3:42 p.m.
From the National Weather Service at Indianapolis: Snow is now overspreading much of central Indiana with additional snowfall accumulations of 1-2 inches expected through this evening. Locally higher amounts cannot be ruled out. Some slick spots on roads are possible, especially on bridges and less traveled roads.
3:14 p.m.
A hazardous weather outlook was issued from the National Weather Service at Indianapolis.
Through Thursday night, snow will continue into the evening and may be locally heavy at times. Up to 1-2 inches of snow is possible, primarily on grassy and elevated surfaces, though localized slick spots on roadways, mainly bridges and overpasses, will be possible. Wind gusts as high as 35-40 mph are possible as well.
Snow will end from north to south mid to late evening.
2:59 p.m.
From Storm Track 8: Round 2 of the first snow this season is playing out as advertised with heavier snow rates. Here are some different views of it from different locations across central Indiana. First image is from the INDOT cam near Gas City. Camera images are from Indiana Department of Transportation and the Carmel city government.
2:23 p.m.
From Storm Track 8: Second round of snow well underway with moderate-heavy snow in some areas. Expect a slower evening commute. This activity will drift southward over the next several hours. Winter weather advisory are in place until 10 p.m. Snow accumulations from 1-2 inches possible near and north of I-74.
2:18 p.m.
From the National Weather Service at Indianapolis: “Snow is now overspreading most areas near and north of I-70. Moderate to heavy snow occurring across north-central Indiana will shift further south over the next few hours. Additional accumulations of 1-2 inches are expected with isolated higher amounts possible.”
11:35 a.m.
From the National Weather Service at Indianapolis: “Most of the 1st round of snow has exited central Indiana, however more snow is on the way! Light snow is expected to reach central Indiana between 1PM and 3PM with heavier bands of snow arriving around and after 4PM.”
