GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) — With northeast Wisconsin's first snowfall on November 21, it's time to gear up for the heavier storms ahead.
Stocking up on essentials like snow shovels, blowers, salt, scrapers, and proper winter wear is critical for managing the season's challenges.

Wes Kimps, manager of the Power Center at Ace Hardware, emphasized the importance of maintaining snowblowers, especially regarding fuel.
“Eighty percent of our repairs are related to fuel issues. If the unit won’t start, it’s most likely due to a fuel problem. Using fresh fuel is the most important thing,” Kimps said.
Kimps also recommended handy winter tools available at Ace Hardware, including mini shovels for cars, battery jumpers, gas additives, and flares.
Preparing vehicles for winter is equally vital. Issues like cold-weather starting troubles or poor tire traction should be addressed before harsher conditions arrive.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, nearly 18,000 car crashes occur annually during winter months, often at slower, less deadly speeds.
Auto Select manager Jaramey Plager advised drivers to pay attention to details like visibility and lighting.

“There’s stuff you don’t think about. Fog or high winds with low visibility can be an issue, so make sure your lights work. Also, get wiper blades that keep your windshield clean for better visibility,” Plager said.
Additionally, pre-salting or pre-wetting your driveway can help manage snow accumulation. On the roads, staying cautious and maintaining safe distances between vehicles are critical to navigating snowy conditions safely.
