Students at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College showcase yearlong antibiotic research
Nov 21, 2024
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - Students at Northwest Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) have spent the past year doing research to combat the worldwide antibiotic crisis.
The 'Tiny Earth in Titletown Symposium' returns on Dec. 6, which will feature a showcase of the students' efforts in antibiotic research and discovery.
While the event isn't for a few weeks, students wrapped up their last day of research on Thursday. Thus, some students got to show off a few examples of what they've learned and how their research has developed over time, before the big show on Dec. 6.

Dr. Angelo Kolokithas, the program director of biology at NWTC has overseen plenty throughout the process and expressed excitement and pride over the students' work.
"It's a really good thing because what we're doing in the world right now is squandering our antibiotics by not finishing our prescriptions or in some instances, not prescribing them correctly, and we're running out of antibiotics," Dr. Kolokithas said. "We're teaming up with this organization (Tiny Earth) to find new antibiotics that can be used in medicine. At the same time, we're trying to educate students and the community."
