(PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo.) — With the Christmas season fast approaching, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is preparing to track Santa again throughout his journey.
Since 1955, the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD), later known as NORAD, has been tracking Santa's flight around the world.
The tradition started when a child looking for Santa mistakenly called the unlisted number of CONAD's Operations Center in Colorado Springs due to a misprint in a department store's ad in the local paper. Ever since, NORAD kept its highly trained, high-tech eyes on the sky for the big man and his team of reindeer.
Each year on Christmas Eve a team of volunteers man the phones and let children know where Santa is in his journey and when he will be stopping by their home to deliver presents.
