CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) - The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) continues to investigate an officer-involved shooting.
Officials said the suspect has died from their injuries after being transported to the hospital. Charleston Police Department officers were called to King Street and Line Street before 10 a.m.
"Officers arrived at the scene, they did encounter two men in a fight which one of the men did present a gun," Lt. Gibson said. "At that point, an officer did fire his service weapon and struck one of the suspects that was involved in the altercation. Immediate aid was rendered on scene."
Police closed down the area near the scene, prompting businesses and residents...
"I got here about 9:40 this morning and the cops were just pulling up, we didn't hear anything until 10:45 when people started to release details of it," Jamie Lsellis-Diprima, owner of the Beacon, said. "We asked the cops first if we were okay, to be close to this building and they said we were fine."
"So we just continued to walk around and we actually - I tried to walk up onto King and that's when a cop stopped us and told us we weren't allowed to walk on there," Sloane Henchosk, student at College of Charleston said. "We've just been walking around but I live directly up this street on the line but so we're trying to find a way to get back home."
Police said it was an insolated incident and residents should not be concerned.
"Ever since I've lived there, I feel pretty safe and everyone's very friendly so even if there's things at times where I may feel unsafe, I still feel protected in this community," Henchosk said.
