CASSELTON, ND (KXNET) — One person was killed and another seriously injured Wednesday in a two-vehicle crash near Casselton. According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, around 6:20 p.m., a Freightliner semi-tractor towing a van trailer was heading east when it came upon two other semis that were jack-knifed in the highway median and not blocking the roadway. The driver started breaking and lost control of the semi, causing it to jack-knife and slide into the median. The attached van trailer remained on the highway, crossing both eastbound lanes. A car heading east on I-94 crashed into the van trailer and became wedged under the trailer. The 75-year-old driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. A 72-year-old female passenger was taken to Sanford Hospital in Fargo with serious injuries. Both had to be extricated from their vehicle. The 37-year-old driver of the semi was not injured. The North Dakota Highway Patrol noted in its report on the crash that snow was falling at the time of the incident, with strong northwest winds causing blowing snow and reduced visibility. The report also noted I-94 was ice covered in the area of the crash. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Today's Top Stories SIGN UP NOW
