NORTH DAKOTA (KXNET) — Hunters are being warned by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department (NDGF) to be wary of ice conditions on the water. Some of the smaller waters across the state are showing signs of being safe, but hunters should still use caution when walking on frozen stock ponds, sloughs, creeks, and rivers. Unstable ice conditions can happen when it forms overnight, resulting in inconsistent thickness. The edges of water can firm up faster than water farther away from shore. The cold months can be a triggering factor for those with asthma Here are a few reminders for those out and about: Snow insulates ice, which hinders solid ice formation, as well as hides cracks, and weak and open water areas. Avoid anything that could signal thin ice including cracks, pressure ridges, and slushy or dark areas. The same goes for ice around trees, brush, embankments, or other structures that are partially submerged. Temperature changes every day, which can cause ice to expand or contract, which affects its strength. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
