BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — BASF settled with the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) after multiple violations at the BASF's Geismar facility. According to a settlement agreement, BASF agrees to pay LDEQ $35,460, of which $5,201.63 goes towards the department's enforcement costs. The LDEQ performed inspections of BASF's Geismar facility in 2017 and found violations through 2017 related to alleged unauthorized emission release and failure to submit required information in a report. The Geismar chemical manufacturing plant produces ethylene oxide/glycols, aniline, acetylene and butanediol. A report from LDEQ states in October 2020, approximately 554 pounds of chlorine was released from a valve on a chlorine line. State law says a written notification is required in the event of unauthorized discharge. BASF submitted a written notification to the department without the required information. Mysterious chemical in tap water identified after nearly 40 years: Is it toxic? While repairing the valve in the chlorine line, three people were potentially exposed to chlorine and were taken to a local hospital. Two people were checked and released on the same day. The third person was held in the hospital for an additional three days. BASF reportedly failed to include the extent of injuries for all three people exposed to chlorine. Another instance where a violation was made included excessive natural gas being sent to a flare, causing multiple pollutants, such as carbon monoxide and formaldehyde to be released for about five months in 2016. The BASF Corporation failed to maintain an air pollution control device, which released about 157 pounds of ammonia in 2020. State law says the reportable quantity to the LDEQ is 100 pounds. BRProud reached out to the LDEQ about the settlement but did not receive a response.
