BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- The Bakersfield City Council approved $2.5 million in funding for a new homeless center in central Bakersfield. Last month, the Open Door Network broke ground on a new facility to be built at 529 Dolores St. The current shelter on East Truxtun Avenue was bought by the California High-Speed Rail Authority. City of Bakersfield votes 6-0 in approval of Recreation & Parks Master Plan The funding was approved Wednesday night and will come from funding from the American Rescue Plan Act. It will be safe haven for the homeless, sexual assault victims, as well as, survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking. Construction on the new center begins in January and is expected to be finished by the end of 2026.
