Running for a Cause: Lake County YMCA is hosting Turkey Day 5K event Nov. 28
The group plans to give 200 turkeys away on Nov. 23 during the second annual Danny Jones turkey giveaway, said Men of Honor co-founder Ed Jones. A couple weeks later, they will invite the public to donate food to provide weekend meals for students without secure sources of food.
Both events will take place at Sub Zero Mission, 1760 North Ridge Road, Painesville Township.
The turkey giveaway will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 23. Jones said that the turkeys will weigh 10 to 14 pounds and be donated by the United Way of Lake County.
“We’re just looking for folks that might be a little bit down on their luck,” he said. “Times are tough still. Food is very expensive.”
Jones said organizers can donate any leftover turkeys to food pantries.
Men of Honor launched the Thanksgiving food giveaway last year in honor of Danny Jones, Ed Jones’ cousin and a club co-founder who died from a heart attack in November 2022.
“This is our small way of trying to honor his memory because he always wanted to help the less fortunate in our communities, and that’s why we do this, that’s why we do this for him,” Jones said.
A donation link is available at donorbox.org/dannyjones. Jones said that the Men of Honor are partnering with the nonprofit K9 Heroes 4 Heroes to make the donations tax-deductible.
“He’s providing service dogs to veterans and first responders that are suffering from PTSD, and it’s a fantastic organization,” he said, referring to K9 Heroes 4 Heroes founder Joe Gionti.
On Dec. 7, the Men of Honor will return to Sub Zero Mission and invite the public to come and donate food for End 68 Hours of Hunger. That food drive will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
According to its website, End 68 Hours of Hunger works to provide weekend meals for children who are food insecure between free school meals at lunch on Friday and breakfast on Monday. It serves communities throughout the country, including Lake County.
Jones said that End 68 Hours of Hunger provided weekend food security for more than 800 children in Lake County in the 2023-24 school year.
He said that people who want to donate can bring items including canned soups, pastas, vegetables, fruits, applesauce, oatmeal, cereal, Pop Tarts, ramen noodles, mac and cheese, granola bars, individually packed snacks and peanut butter and jelly. Items cannot have glass.
